Roof Collection
Protect, clean and extend the life of the most expensive surface on your property.
A roof is the single costliest thing on a house to replace and the one part nobody ever looks at. Moss holds water against the tiles, water freezes, and frost does the rest — slowly, invisibly, for years. Cleaning a roof properly is not cosmetic work. It is the cheapest thing you can do to put off a five-figure bill.
What it protects
The tiles themselves
Moss holds water against the tile and up into the laps. That water freezes, expands, and lifts the fired face off the surface a fraction at a time. Once a tile has spalled it drinks water for the rest of its life, and there is no putting the face back on it.
What is underneath them
Roofs fail from the felt and battens upwards, not from the tiles down. Water getting past the covering rots battens and soaks insulation for years before anything shows on a bedroom ceiling — and by the time it shows, the cheap fix has gone.
The wall below the gutter
Everything that comes off a roof ends up in the guttering. A roof left to its moss is the usual reason a gutter blocks, and a blocked gutter is the usual reason a wall goes damp. It is one problem with three bills attached to it.
What it covers
- Survey firstWe measure the roof before we quote — area, pitch and access — so the price reflects your roof rather than an average one.
- Moss removalScraped and soft-brushed by hand. We do not pressure wash roof tiles: it strips the surface, opens the pores and leaves the tile worse off than the moss ever left it.
- Biocide treatmentApplied after clearing to kill spores in the surface, which is what keeps it clean for years rather than months.
- Ridge and hip mortarThe bedding along a ridge is usually the first thing on a roof to let go, and a loose ridge tile in a gale is the most dangerous object on a house. We look at every metre of it.
- Valleys and flashingsCleared and inspected. A valley carries the water off two roof planes at once, which makes it exactly where debris packs in — out of sight from everywhere on the ground.
- Slipped and missing tilesPhotographed and reported, and reset where it can be done safely from the access we already have.
- Gutter clearance includedEverything that comes off the roof ends up in the gutters, so clearing them afterwards is part of the job, not an extra.
- Overhanging growthBranches touching or shading a roof keep it permanently damp and drop the debris that starts the whole cycle again. We will tell you what is worth cutting back, and why.
- Condition reportPhotographs of anything we find — slipped tiles, failed pointing, damaged flashing — whether or not it is work we do.
Perfect for
Anyone who would rather protect a roof than replace one, while the problem is still small enough to be cheap.
How often
An annual soft wash and moss treatment, with a gutter inspection included every visit.
A clean and treat every four to five years suits most Essex roofs. North-facing and tree-shaded roofs need it sooner.
Everything we use is safe around pets, children and planting. Nothing we apply to your home should cost you your lawn or worry you about the dog.
What it costs
Priced by the square metre of roof surface, which is larger than the footprint of the house because of the pitch. We work the area out from survey data before we visit. We measure the property from survey data before we quote, so the figure we give you is worked out from your building rather than guessed from the kerb. Every quote is confirmed on site before any work starts, and we will tell you if we think you do not need the work.
